I can count numerous times where I wake up during my spouse’s nightmare only to find him yelling or jolting around in our bed. This can be very intrusive and interrupts both of our rest. Medical providers often time prescribe sleep aids that are designed for those suffering from P.T.S.D. Trazedone is an anti-depressant that improves one’s ability to fall asleep and reduces the frequency of nightmares. Another medication that is not habit forming include minipress, a medication intended to lower blood presser. If these do not help, your loved one’s medical provider may prescribe a stronger medication. These include, Temazepam, Kolonopin, and lorazepam. These are also prescribed to treat general anxiety disorders. As helpful as these are it’s definitely worth it for your loved one to speak to their medical providers.
Aside from medications there are therapeutic methods to help with one’s sleep disturbances. A therapeutic approach that my husband has had success with is called “Rewind”. Rewind is a modified cognitive behavioral therapy. Rewind requires the patient to recall a nightmare, writing it down and changing the ending to end in a positive experience. This can be completed through guided meditative therapy and on one’s own time with a pen and paper. Consequently a therapist that specializes in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Nightmares may conduct this therapy over a duration of sessions. It’s made a huge difference in my husband’s ability to sleep. Furthermore, rest is the number one thing a person needs for better health.
