Scheduled activities PTSD sufferers would benefit from will help your loved one tremendously. Again, the point here is to not overwhelm your loved one with too many scheduled activities. Think about what you have going on in your life one month at a time. Keeping a wall calendar in a common area in your home where everyone has access to it is key. Furthermore, adding the same scheduled of events in your smart phone with reminders set keeps everyone on the same page.
Synchronize Schedules For The Entire Family
With our busy lives as it is in this day in age, having a loved one suffer from PTSD symptoms can really throw a wrench into the day. Not everyone gets the benefit of having a harmonious and stable day-to-day life. However, you can set up a daily routine with your loved one who suffers from PTSD to gain as much normalcy as possible. Break out the day with morning, afternoon, evening, and nighttime routines. Until your loved one has adopted a new regimen start with adding one new activity every two weeks. Consequently they will begin to experience a calmer, more stable way of life.
An example of what my husband has in place after his morning routine includes the following. This example goes over what an entire week may look like.
Monday: Go to Therapy Session
Tuesday: Volunteer at Food Bank
Wednesday: Listen to Favorite PTSD talk Radio Show
Thursday: Kids’s Soccer Games
Friday: One hour nature drive
Saturday: Take kids to the park
Sunday: Pay Bills online
In addition you will have more that needs accomplished throughout each day. Making sure there is only one thing that is a “non-negotiable” eases the stress. Therefore having a less stressful feeling about one’s “to do” list will ensure its completion. Most likely reducing the onset of PTSD symptoms. PTSD symptoms cannot be avoided 100% of the time but setting up a routine will keep the mind sharp. If your loved one with PTSD has symptoms most likely they are not enjoying life. In turn, this affects your life’s enrichment too. You do not want to start resenting your spouse. Also you would not want to start carrying guilt around with you.
Scheduled activities PTSD
Ever since the onset of your spouse’s or loved one’s PTST symptoms life has been one hell of a storm. It is hard to find the eye of the storm – the calmest place to be. Due to implementing a routine your entire family will find the eye of the storm. Scheduled activities create stability that people who suffer from PTSD need. I want to warn you in advance that this sounds super easy to do but it is extremely hard. Create a routine with your loved one, preferably not while in an active episode. Then stick to it! In the beginning this will take a lot more effort. Keep in mind that your loved one suffering from PTSD symptoms has a hard enough time remembering to brush their teeth.
Scheduled activities PTSD survivors benefit from are the kind that keeps their minds busy. Especially relevant are the tasks that keep them in the present moment, grounded, and centered. Include activities outdoors. My husband takes a walk every morning around our neighborhood. This is good exercise too which also promotes healthy brain activity. Many of these Scheduled activities PTSD sufferers and other adults enjoy are very inexpensive.

- Adult Coloring Books
- Crossword Puzzle
- Jigsaw Puzzles
- Reviewing positive affirmations
- Physical Fitness/Go to the gym
Invest in your loved one and buy a couple of adult coloring books, puzzle books, and subscribe to your local newspaper. The real newspaper that arrives at your door step. It is important to have something tangible. I don’t suggest scheduling specific art activities. But schedule leisure time and they can decide what they are in the mood to do. While these are leisure activities it may take some time to feel comfortable with engaging in scheduled activities PTSD victims are not used too. My husband had a rough go at it when he adopted coloring into his day-to-day routine. He would say things like, “I feel like I am special needs”. In conclusion, after diving into a few activities he really started enjoying them. And we started enjoying a more stable environment.
